Expedition Base Set (2002) – Set Guide & Collector Overview

The start of the e-Reader era — a major shift in Pokémon card design, gameplay integration, and collector appeal.

Welcome back to the PokeFarm TCG Vintage Set Guide Series. After finishing the Legendary Collection, we now enter a completely new era of Pokémon cards: the e-Reader series.

Released in 2002, Expedition Base Set marked a turning point in the hobby. The design changed, the artwork expanded, and the cards introduced a new interactive feature that set them apart from everything before.

This set is especially interesting because it sits right between the classic Wizards of the Coast feel and the more modern Pokémon TCG direction that would follow. It still has strong vintage appeal, but the card frames, artwork space, and e-Reader technology make it feel very different from Base Set, Jungle, Fossil, Team Rocket, and the Neo era.

About Expedition Base Set

Expedition Base Set is the first release in the e-Reader series, introducing a completely new visual style and technology integration.

  • Release Year: 2002
  • Set Size: 165 cards
  • Series: e-Reader

The biggest change is the introduction of dot code strips along the sides of the cards. These could be scanned using the Nintendo e-Reader to unlock mini-games, Pokédex data, and more.

Even though the e-Reader functionality is mostly irrelevant today, it gives Expedition cards a unique look that collectors immediately recognize.

For collectors, Expedition is important because it begins the final stretch of the Wizards of the Coast era. After Expedition came Aquapolis and Skyridge, two of the most expensive and difficult vintage sets to complete. That makes Expedition the starting point for one of the most collector-focused periods in Pokémon TCG history.

A New Look for Pokémon Cards

Expedition cards feel very different from anything before them:

  • Larger artwork windows
  • Cleaner layout
  • More modern design elements
  • e-Reader dot codes on the sides

For some collectors, this was a big shift away from the classic WOTC aesthetic. For others, it marked the beginning of a more modern and polished era.

This design change is one reason Expedition has aged well. The cards feel experimental, but still vintage. They are old enough to carry nostalgia, but different enough to stand apart in a binder.

Top Chase Cards from Expedition

  • Charizard (Holo)
  • Blastoise (Holo)
  • Mew (Holo)
  • Gengar (Holo)
  • Ampharos (Holo)

The biggest names in Expedition are easy to understand: Charizard, Blastoise, Mew, and Gengar all have strong collector demand outside of this set already. When those Pokémon appear in early e-Reader form, clean copies can become especially desirable.

The reverse holos are also worth paying attention to. Many collectors focus on the holos first, but Expedition reverse holos have their own appeal because of the era, the card layout, and the difficulty of finding clean copies.

Collector Value and Market Interest

Expedition has gained more respect over time because collectors now understand how important the e-Reader era really is. For years, many people focused mostly on Base Set through Neo Destiny. But as vintage collectors started moving deeper into the timeline, Expedition, Aquapolis, and Skyridge became much more appreciated.

Cards like Charizard, Blastoise, Mew, and Gengar can command strong prices, especially in clean raw condition or high-grade slabs. For raw cards, TCGplayer is usually the best place to check active market pricing. For graded cards, tools like PriceCharting can be helpful for PSA sale trends.

Condition matters a lot with Expedition. The larger borders and e-Reader layout can make edge wear, whitening, and corner damage stand out. A clean near mint copy can be much harder to find than a played binder copy.

What’s Next? — Aquapolis

Next in the PokeFarm TCG Vintage Set Guide Series is Aquapolis, the second e-Reader era set and one of the most important late-WOTC expansions.

Aquapolis builds on the e-Reader design introduced in Expedition, but adds even more collector excitement with Crystal Pokémon, including the legendary Crystal Lugia.

If Expedition is the beginning of the e-Reader era, Aquapolis is where that era really starts to show its collector power.
