Pokémon EX Unseen Forces Set Guide (2005)

Umbreon. Espeon. Lugia. Tyranitar. Gold Stars. Silver-border EX cards.
Few Pokémon sets combine nostalgia, playability, and collector demand quite like EX Unseen Forces.

What Is EX Unseen Forces?

Released in August 2005, EX Unseen Forces was the tenth expansion in the EX era and one of the most beloved sets ever printed.

The set contains 115 cards plus secret rares and Gold Stars, bringing together Johto favorites, Eeveelutions, legendary Pokémon, and some of the strongest EX cards of the entire generation.

Today it is considered one of the premier collector sets of the EX era and is often compared with EX Team Rocket Returns, EX Deoxys, and EX Delta Species as one of the cornerstone releases from Pokémon’s silver-border years.

Pokémon In 2005

The Pokémon franchise was deep into Generation III.

  • Pokémon Emerald had recently launched.
  • FireRed and LeafGreen were still hugely popular.
  • Nintendo DS had recently debuted.
  • Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness was arriving.
  • The anime was in the Advanced Generation era.

May, Max, Brock, and Ash continued traveling through Hoenn while Pokémon collectors were opening packs filled with EX cards, Gold Stars, and reverse holo stamped cards.

For many collectors today, Unseen Forces represents the exact peak of mid-2000s Pokémon nostalgia.

The TCG During Unseen Forces

Competitive Pokémon in 2005 looked dramatically different than modern Standard play.

Players relied heavily on evolution lines, resource management, and slower setup strategies compared to today’s aggressive EX and Tera decks.

Several cards from Unseen Forces became tournament staples:

  • Rare Candy
  • Energy Search
  • Espeon ex
  • Umbreon ex
  • Politoed ex
  • Scizor ex

The set also expanded strategic options for Darkness-type decks and introduced several Pokémon Powers that rewarded careful planning rather than explosive first-turn attacks.

The Silver Border Era Is Hot Again

One trend collectors have noticed over the past several years is growing demand for silver-border EX-era cards.

Collectors who grew up opening EX packs are now adults with disposable income, and many are rebuilding childhood collections.

Unlike modern cards printed in enormous quantities, EX-era cards often have:

  • Lower survival rates
  • More wear from actual play
  • Smaller PSA populations
  • More nostalgic artwork styles

This combination has pushed strong EX-era cards significantly higher over time.

Top Chase Cards

Umbreon ex

Umbreon ex EX Unseen Forces

Umbreon ex is arguably the face of the set.

Raw copies frequently sell for hundreds of dollars depending on condition.
High-grade PSA examples can command several thousand dollars because Umbreon remains one of the most collected Pokémon in the hobby.

Espeon ex

Espeon ex EX Unseen Forces

Espeon ex has followed a similar path.
While often slightly cheaper than Umbreon ex, demand remains extremely strong because Eeveelution collectors rarely stop with just one card.

Lugia ex

Lugia ex EX Unseen Forces

Lugia has become one of the safest long-term collector Pokémon in the hobby.

Every generation seems to rediscover Lugia, and premium vintage copies continue attracting strong interest.

Tyranitar ex

Tyranitar ex EX Unseen Forces

Tyranitar ex remains one of the strongest artworks from the set and has seen consistent appreciation over time.

Scizor ex

Scizor has quietly become one of the strongest performers among collectors who appreciate Johto Pokémon.

Gold Stars: The Ultimate Chase

The Gold Star cards are the true grails of EX Unseen Forces.

  • Entei Gold Star
  • Raikou Gold Star
  • Suicune Gold Star

Gold Stars were incredibly difficult to pull and remain among the rarest chase cards Pokémon has ever produced.

Many PSA 10 examples sell for thousands of dollars and continue attracting elite collectors worldwide.

Sleeper Cards To Watch

  • Scizor ex
  • Politoed ex
  • Meganium ex
  • Rocket’s Persian ex
  • Ho-Oh ex
  • Feraligatr ex
  • Rare reverse holo Eeveelutions
  • Stamped reverse holo starters

These cards typically trail the headline chase cards but could continue appreciating as collectors pursue master sets.

Sealed Product Today

Sealed EX Unseen Forces product is exceptionally difficult to find.

  • Booster packs
  • Blister packs
  • Theme decks
  • Booster boxes

Individual packs often sell for several hundred dollars.

Authentic booster boxes have become major collector pieces and can reach five-figure valuations depending on condition and market demand.

Many collectors now view unopened EX-era product as display collectibles rather than opening opportunities.

PSA Population Discussion

One major reason Unseen Forces remains expensive is population scarcity.

Many cards were opened by children, played heavily, and stored without sleeves.

As a result:

  • PSA 10 populations remain relatively low.
  • Centering issues are common.
  • Silver borders show wear easily.
  • High-grade examples command large premiums.

Collectors pursuing PSA 9 and PSA 10 copies often compete for a surprisingly limited supply.

🐣 Torchic’s Collector Tip

EX Unseen Forces isn’t just popular because of Umbreon and Lugia.
Many of the lower-population reverse holos and lesser-known EX cards have become surprisingly difficult to find in near-mint condition.
If you’re building a master set, don’t ignore the commons and uncommons—they often become the toughest cards to finish.
