EX Emerald (2005)
Battle Frontier arrives, Deoxys keeps shining, and some of the best sleeper cards of the EX era quietly hide in plain sight.
Checking In From the Farm…
EX Emerald released in May 2005 and continued the Pokémon TCG’s journey through
the Hoenn region. While many collectors immediately think about Team Rocket Returns,
FireRed & LeafGreen, or Deoxys when discussing the EX era, Emerald quietly became
one of the most interesting sets of the generation.
This set introduced cards inspired by the Battle Frontier from the Game Boy Advance
game Pokémon Emerald while continuing the powerful Pokémon-ex mechanics that defined
competitive play during the mid-2000s.
Today, collectors chase Emerald for its gorgeous artwork, iconic ex cards,
beautiful reverse-holo stamped cards, and one of the most recognizable secret rares
of the entire EX era.

Pokémon Emerald and the Battle Frontier Era
When EX Emerald launched, Pokémon Emerald on the Game Boy Advance had become the
definitive version of Ruby and Sapphire.
Players were spending countless hours tackling the Battle Frontier, breeding
competitive Pokémon, collecting Battle Points, and attempting difficult challenge
streaks against Frontier Brains.
Several cards in the set directly reference this content:
- Battle Frontier
- Scott
- Lanette’s Net Search
- Mr. Stone’s Project
- Professor Birch
For many collectors in their 30s today, Emerald represents peak Game Boy Advance
Pokémon nostalgia.
What Was Happening In The Anime?
During the EX Emerald period, the anime was deep into the Advanced Generation era.
Ash was traveling through Hoenn while viewers followed fan-favorite characters
including May, Max, Brock, Team Rocket, and numerous Pokémon Contest storylines.
Pokémon like Mudkip, Treecko, Torchic, Swablu, Spoink, Numel, and many others
featured throughout the anime and appear inside this set.
Watching those episodes again today instantly transports many collectors back to
Saturday morning television and the Game Boy Advance era.

Deoxys ex
Raichu ex
Deoxys ex remains one of the signature cards of the EX era. Collectors love the
silver-bordered design, unique artwork, and connection to one of Pokémon’s most
mysterious legendary Pokémon.
Raichu ex continues to gain appreciation because high-grade vintage Raichu cards
remain significantly scarcer than comparable Pikachu cards.
Rayquaza
Rayquaza cards have become one of the safest long-term collector categories in the
hobby. Even non-ex Rayquaza cards from EX Emerald receive attention from collectors
building Rayquaza-focused collections.
Sleeper Cards I Would Watch
- Rayquaza (#9) – affordable compared to many Rayquaza cards.
- Pichu (#59) – iconic baby Pokémon with strong nostalgia.
- Pikachu (#60) – Pikachu demand never truly disappears.
- Torchic (#69) – starter Pokémon collectors continue growing.
- Mudkip (#56) – one of the most beloved Hoenn starters.
- Battle Frontier (#75) – strong nostalgia from Emerald players.
- Reverse-Holo Stamped Commons – still undervalued in many cases.
One pattern collectors repeatedly see is that iconic Pokémon often outperform
expectations over long periods even when they are not the headline chase cards.
Can You Still Buy Sealed EX Emerald?
Yes—but it is not cheap.
Sealed EX Emerald products that still appear on the market include:
- Booster packs
- Booster boxes
- Theme decks
- Graded sealed booster packs
Booster boxes have become genuine collector pieces and rarely surface compared
to modern sealed products.
Most collectors today either purchase singles, graded cards, or sealed booster
packs rather than attempting to open an entire booster box.
Collector Outlook
EX Emerald sits in a sweet spot between nostalgia and scarcity.
It features:
- Hoenn starters
- Rayquaza
- Deoxys
- Battle Frontier nostalgia
- Popular ex cards
- Beautiful stamped reverses
- A secret rare
Those ingredients have historically performed well over long collecting cycles.
While nobody can predict future prices, EX Emerald checks many boxes collectors
usually look for when evaluating long-term interest.

Back To The Farm
EX Emerald may not always receive the same attention as Team Rocket Returns or
FireRed & LeafGreen, but it quietly delivers some of the best nostalgia and
collector appeal of the entire EX era.
Between Deoxys, Rayquaza, Battle Frontier memories, starter Pokémon, gorgeous
stamped reverses, and scarce sealed products, Emerald remains one of the most
enjoyable sets to revisit nearly two decades later.
