Torchic Says:
“Rayquaza, Deoxys, Gold Stars, EX cards… this set has a little bit of everything collectors love.”
Back to 2005
Released in 2005, EX Deoxys arrived during one of the most interesting stretches of the Pokémon franchise. The Game Boy Advance era was in full swing, Hoenn nostalgia was being built in real time, and the Pokémon TCG was leaning heavily into Pokémon-ex, reverse holos, and increasingly collectible chase cards.
The set is closely tied to Deoxys and Rayquaza, two Pokémon that defined the space/sky mystery side of Generation 3. This also connects naturally to the movie Destiny Deoxys, where Deoxys and Rayquaza play major roles.
What Was Happening in the Anime and Games?
The anime was still deep in the Advanced Generation / Hoenn era. Ash, May, Max, and Brock were exploring Hoenn, and Pokémon like Torchic, Treecko, Mudkip, Metagross, Ludicolo, Rayquaza, and Deoxys were becoming familiar to fans.
On the video game side, the Game Boy Advance era had already given collectors Ruby, Sapphire, FireRed, LeafGreen, and Emerald. That matters because EX Deoxys sits right in the middle of the Gen 3 nostalgia window that many adult collectors are now revisiting.

What Types of Cards Are in EX Deoxys?
- Regular commons, uncommons, and rares
- Holographic rares
- Reverse holos
- Pokémon-ex cards
- Gold Star Pokémon
- Special Energy cards
- Trainer cards tied to the Hoenn / space theme
This is why EX Deoxys is such a fun master set. You are not just chasing regular cards. You are tracking holos, reverse holos, EX cards, and the huge Gold Star cards that have become grails today.
The Big Chase: Rayquaza Gold Star
Rayquaza Gold Star — one of the biggest EX-era chase cards.
Rayquaza Gold Star #107 is the card most collectors think of first when EX Deoxys comes up. It is one of the true grails of the entire EX era.
Raw copies can sell for thousands depending on condition, and graded copies can reach serious five-figure territory in higher grades. PSA sale records show strong prices even in mid grades, with PSA 7–9 examples reaching major collector money, while PSA 10 copies are extremely rare and sit in a completely different tier.
The reason is simple: Rayquaza is one of the most popular Legendary Pokémon ever, Gold Stars were incredibly hard to pull, and EX-era cards are notoriously difficult to find clean.

Torchic Tip:
“Everybody wants the Rayquaza Gold Star, but condition is everything. A crease, whitening, or surface scratch can change the value fast.”
Latias Gold Star
Latias Gold Star is another major chase card from this set. It does not always get the same attention as Rayquaza, but it has everything collectors like: Gold Star rarity, Legendary Pokémon appeal, beautiful artwork, and strong long-term demand.
Deoxys ex Cards
EX Deoxys includes multiple Deoxys ex cards, representing different forms of Deoxys. Collectors often like displaying them together because they show off the full identity of the set.

Sleeper Cards to Watch
Everyone talks about Rayquaza Gold Star, but not every collector can afford that card. That is where the sleeper cards matter.
- Jirachi holo — always has long-term collector interest.
- Rayquaza holo — cheaper than the Gold Star, but still tied to the same character demand.
- Metagross holo — strong Hoenn-era Pokémon with competitive and collector appeal.
- Ludicolo holo — fun, memorable, and strongly tied to the Hoenn anime/game era.
- Reverse holo rares — underrated, condition-sensitive, and very binder-friendly.
- Deoxys forms — collectors may eventually want complete Deoxys runs, not just the biggest hit.
Sealed Product Today
Sealed EX Deoxys product is extremely collectible today. The biggest sealed items collectors watch include:
- Booster boxes
- Loose booster packs
- Blister packs
- Theme decks
- Factory-sealed collections
Booster boxes are the most dramatic item because they combine display appeal, low surviving supply, and the chance of Gold Star pulls. Loose packs can also be expensive, but buyers need to be careful because older loose packs may be weighed or searched.
Card Game Then vs. Now
At the time, Pokémon-ex cards were the big risk/reward mechanic. They were powerful, but when one was knocked out, the opponent took two Prize cards. That is similar in spirit to later mechanics like Pokémon-GX, Pokémon V, and Pokémon ex today.
The modern game is faster and more consistent, but EX Deoxys belongs to the era where the TCG was clearly evolving toward the style players recognize now: stronger attackers, more complex Energy use, and more powerful setup cards.
PSA and Grading Thoughts
EX-era cards can be hard to grade clean. Edges, corners, surface scratches, and print issues all matter. That is part of why PSA 9s and PSA 10s can command big premiums compared to raw copies.
For expensive cards like Rayquaza Gold Star, Latias Gold Star, and key Pokémon-ex cards, condition is not just a detail — it is the difference between a cool binder card and a major investment piece.

Back to the Farm
EX Deoxys is one of those sets that keeps getting more important the longer collectors look at it. It has Rayquaza, Deoxys, Gold Stars, EX cards, great reverse holos, movie connection, Hoenn nostalgia, and scarce sealed product.
If you are priced out of the Gold Stars, do not ignore the middle of the set. Sometimes the best long-term collection pieces are the cards people skipped while chasing the obvious grails.
